DPP has been shortlisted for two awards at the Royal Town Planning Institute National Awards.
The first award is in the Excellence in Planning for a Successful Economy for Cardiff University’s Spark|Sbarc project. The second is in the Excellence in Planning for Health and Wellbeing for Morpeth Leisure Centre.
DPP Secured planning consent for Cardiff University’s Spark|Sbarc building, which stands as the world’s first social science research park, seamlessly blending academic inquiry with commercial innovation over 12,000 square meters. Serving as a dynamic nexus for academia, industry, and entrepreneurship, it houses a multitude of research centres and labs dedicated to advancing knowledge and effecting positive societal change.
Designed by Hawkins Brown, the building which evokes a stack of books on the exterior and showcases a central oculus staircase within, epitomises excellence in design, and was recognised by the Royal Society of Architects in Wales (RSAW) earlier this year for its achievement. Constructed by Bouygues and project managed by Gleeds, the finished scheme successfully meets the client brief of fostering collaboration.
The Morpeth Sports and Leisure Centre stands as an excellent example of the effectiveness of collaboration, prioritising community-centered design to achieve remarkable results. Through the combined efforts of Northumberland County Council, Active Northumberland, GT3 Architects, DPP Planning, and Willmott Dixon, this facility sets a new standard for public sector buildings. It seamlessly integrates sport, leisure, and community amenities, enriching the heart of Morpeth and offering a truly inclusive space for all.
Navigating through various challenges such as COVID and economic uncertainties, the sports and leisure centre has brought the community together and addressed social, economic and environmental issues for today and many years to come.
Last month Lindsey Richards FRTPI, President of the RTPI was given tours of both projects. DPP Project leads Gareth Hooper and Jo Robison will be attending the awards ceremony later this month with members of the client and design teams from each project.
