DPP have been appointed as planning consultants on a £31M transformational project to bridge the River Wear.
Following the successful delivery of planning approval for the Riverside Sunderland project, DPP have been appointed to act as planning consultants on the proposals for a high-level pedestrian and cycle bridge.
Featuring augmented reality, the crossing will allow people to use their smartphones to see virtual displays, creating experiences that council bosses say will ‘bring the city’s digital ambitions to life.’
The bridge will be fitted with creative lighting to appear as a ‘shard of light’ in the evening, illuminating the green open spaces that flank the riverside below.
If approved, the bridge is expected to open by Summer 2023.
Speaking about the appointment, Director Jo Robison said:
Invalid slider ID or alias.Following on from securing planning permission for the Riverside office buildings on the banks of the Wear, we are delighted to be appointed by Sunderland City Council to bring forward the next stage of the Riverside Masterplan. The bridge will be a transformative new landmark for the City of Sunderland and a crucial piece of the jigsaw to deliver the regeneration of Riverside, linking the Stadium and Sheepfolds with the City Centre. Once in place, we look forward to bringing communities together and seeing a new bridge of light for this vibrant city.
