Working with Stockton-on-Tees Council, DPP are proud to have secured planning permission for the development of a new leisure facility in Thornaby.
Designed by Ryder Architects, the development will provide a new, modern leisure facility which will include a five-lane swimming pool, gym, sauna and changing facilities, alongside associated cycle and car parking facilities and soft and hard landscaping. The new development will sit on a vacant brownfield site in Thornaby District Centre and will connect to Thornaby Pavillion via a bridge.
The new leisure facility has been designed to promote sustainable travel, aims to achieve BREEAM ‘very good’ status and will provide a biodiversity net gain of almost 30 per cent. The proposal will also incorporate photovoltaics, Air Source Heat Pumps and glazing to encourage natural light across the facility.
DPP worked closely with the client, project team and Local Planning Authority to secure planning approval, overcoming a range of initial concerns.
The scheme is due to begin later in 2025, with the facility opening to the public in 2026.
Speaking about the project, Sam Dowell from Ryder Architects said:
We’re thrilled to see Thornaby’s new leisure facility reach this important milestone. Working closely with Tees Active, our team has designed a versatile and accessible space that will provide exceptional health and wellbeing facilities for the community. We’re excited to see the project progress and can’t wait for the people of Thornaby to enjoy the finished result.
Speaking about the consent, Emma Grant, Planner at DPP said:
This has been an exciting project to work on, which will provide a new, modern leisure facility on a vacant, brownfield site in Thornaby, Stockton-on-Tees. The investment into this project by Stockton-on-Tees Council will create improved facilities, promoting physical activity within the Borough.
