DPP are delighted to have achieved approval for Hull KR’s new sports village consisting of state of the are facilities, fan zone, community pitch, refurbishment to the Waudby Centre and new retail park.
The scheme has been described as a once in a lifetime opportunity for the City, creating new sporting facilities and hundreds of jobs to regenerate an underutilised site that has sat empty for 20 years. The sports village will have brand new facilities including a gym, new playing pitches, and a padel centre. The new development sees the introduction of a fan zone where people can gather for sporting events in a community atmosphere. Alongside this, there will be refurbishments to the Waudby Leisure Centre to modernise these local amenities.
While the focal point of the scheme is the sporting facilities, the scheme extends beyond sport. There will be new employment and retail opportunities in the form of a new supermarket, a homeware store, and smaller business and retail units. The proposals include new offices and meeting space for The Hull KR Foundation, which will operate and manage the community facilities.
The masterplan is for all of this to be set in completely new public realm to help with the matchday experience and provide a new gateway to Craven Park. The plans contribute significantly to the wider rejuvenation efforts ongoing across East Hull by Hull City Council and aim to bring direct benefit to local communities.
Overall, the project will provide:
- World class facilities for Hull KR’s professional, women’s and academy teams;
- A new home for the Hull KR Foundation to continue their work on obesity, knife crime, and raising aspirations in the community;
- A new lease of life to the Waudby Centre, securing it for the future and making sure it plays an active part in the community;
- A new fan zone and pedestrian access to Craven Park to enhance the match day experience.
- A new retail park to fund the new facilities and transform this underutilised site that has sat empty for 20 years;
- Hundreds of jobs during construction and operation.
It is hoped that a start on site will occur later in 2026 with completion phased through 2027/28.
