On behalf of Graham Construction, DPP have secured planning consent for the partial redevelopment of Castle Rock School, Coalville, Leicestershire.
This essential project, designed by DLA architecture, will see the demolition of a number of existing school buildings which are in poor condition and the construction of a two-storey replacement teaching block. The new teaching block is accompanied by a new Multi-Use Games Area, improvements to playing fields and additional landscaping throughout the site, creating a much needed high-quality, purpose-built teaching facility.
The development has been carefully designed to enhance and celebrate the sites’ location within the National Forest and countryside, as well as recognising the rich history of the school. This has included the relocation of a key sculpture wall within the site to a prominent position, and the use of natural materials throughout the design.
The new block will be net zero in carbon and provide a 10% net gain in biodiversity; continuing the Department for Education’s commitment to sustainable development. The new block and campus will also improve staff and student experience and enable an improved design curriculum.
DPP provided preliminary advice before preparing and submitting a pre-application enquiry and carrying out a co-ordinated public consultation programme to gain early feedback. For the full planning application, DPP prepared and coordinated the planning application pack in liaison with the consultant team, resolving early concerns raised. DPP led the engagement with the Council to resolve a number of consultee comments relating to highways, Sport England and heritage, as well as resolving a committee call in from the local councillor. This de-risked the application and enabled a delegated decision to be made.
DPP have been retained to discharge the conditions tied to the planning permission and are working hard on facilitating a start on site within 2025.
Speaking about the consent, Jess Knight Principal Planner at DPP said:
We are delighted to have secured this consent, which will transform the existing school site to provide new, purpose-built facilities that will bring significant educational benefits to both staff and students. The consent highlights the collaborative effort of the applicant team and planning officer to overcome concerns to secure the long-term future of the school.
