DPP’s Cardiff office, alongside ECE Westworks, has submitted plans for a 29-room ApartHotel on behalf of 365 Rooms Bristol Ltd. The scheme proposes to convert existing buildings on site (including the Grade II listed 71 Old Market and locally significant Shepherds Hall), along with sensitive and appropriate extensions, to provide a mix of studio, 1/1.5/2 bed units.
The plans utilise modular and reversible construction methods to ensure that the impact on existing buildings is minimised, securing heritage features for future generations. The new build elements have been designed to respect the local vernacular and cues from the existing building, whilst forming the final edge to the new public square to the south. The scale, material and finishes of the development will complement the area, DPP’s senior planner Tom Wright explains;
These exciting plans will enhance the character and appearance of a brownfield plot, bringing an otherwise redundant and under-performing site back into use. The re-design extends a set of important historical buildings which if approved, will make a positive urban design contribution to the Old Market high street.
