Welcome to our public consultation page for the exciting proposals for the proposed application seeking planning permission for the construction of a new Lidl store at land north of Sheffield Road, Hoyland.

The proposed development is being brought forward by Lidl Great Britain Ltd. A planning application is due to be submitted to Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council shortly, and we are providing you with the opportunity to view and comment in advance of the submission.

The Site

The site is located to the west of Hoyland, Barnsley and to the east of the recent Birdwell Roundabout junction, which is adjacent to Junction 36 of the M1. The site measures approximately 0.86 hectares in size and lies in an area of Hoyland subject to significant change in recent years, with several commercial developments alongside Birdwell Roundabout including new Taco Bell and Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants, Costa Coffee and Starbucks Coffee. The adopted Hoyland West Masterplan Framework development site also lies just south of the site, to the south-west of Sheffield Road.

The Proposal

In summary, the proposed development is for the contruction of a new Lidl store. The new store will provide a multi-million-pound investment into the area and will provide a range of great value products that are high quality at a low price, helping to diversify and increase shopping choice within the area. A small selection of comparison goods would also be stocked.

The proposals include:

  • Construction of a 1,900sqm Lidl foodstore;
  • Provision of 114 car parking spaces including 5 disabled space, 9 parent and child spaces, and 2 electric vehicle charging points;
  • Provision of soft landscaping and planting across the site. 

The southern elevation of the store which faces onto Sheffield Road will be glazed, whilst the remaining elevations will comprise artifical stone, and white and grey cladding.  The store is 1 storey in height with a mono-pitched sloping roof, with the lowest point located closest to Cross Keys Lane.

A new access to the site will be created off Cross Keys Lane, located at the southeast corner of the site via Sheffield Road.   

The store will also see the creation of 40 full time equivalent jobs once opened, in addition to those created through construction, with hourly pay above the National Living Wage and in-house training available for staff.
